| I'd be more than happy to help with anything as I'm sure most of the guild will too. After all if you're new to Role-playing it can be a bit daunting at first. The only thing that might cause a problem is that I'm not here most weekends because I help run a club night (the next one is this Saturday unfortunately), but I can certainly chat with you about creating a character background story via PM's if you want? You might also find that reading parts of this will help you define a character more easily. _________________ |

| Here's a quick guide that I've put together for you to make a start on a character: 1. Start Small When creating a character the I find the best thing to do is not to over-complicate things. The best way to do this I believe is to start with the smaller details. Little things like what species your character is, what name, what planet they're from, what gender, what age, what height/weight are all good beginnings to creating a character. Once you got a basic idea of what the character is then you can start working on the finer details. 2. Personality Now personally I think this is the most important aspect in creating a new character as their personality is truly what defines them as a seperate entity from everyone else and more often than not this is what actually brings them to life. My preferred way of doing this is to pick out aspects of personalities that I find interesting and mix them about with aspects of my personality that I have or didn't wish I had in some cases! I know it sounds crazy but after all you have to be able 'connect' with that character in some way so I find that mixing both of these aspects helps me develop my relationship with the character that I'm portraying. Again everyone is different in how they go about it, some may see a character that they love in a movie or a TV series and think "hey I wanna be just like him!" I know that I've often used some characters in popular media as a reference point and mixed aspects of several of them into one to make a whole new character. Another great way of working out your characters personality is to use the D&D alignment system. It's a superb way to figure out your character from a moral and ethical standpoint and a good reference to aid your character in how he would react in certain situations. 3. Lore-Friendly A common mistake that I find people make is they go ahead and start adding details to their character that don't fit the particular universe they are set in. For example naming your character is a very important process and is often overlooked. I've been to several guild sites now and witnessed names like "Shredder" and "Solid Snake" that not only sound ridiculous in a Star Wars setting but they can also warn other RPers to stay away from that character as it looks very rushed and unimaginitive. Another pitfall I find is people naming their character after an already established character. For example something like "Lucas Skywalker" would not be an appropiate name for role-playing in a Star Wars MMO. Sticking to the lore doesn't just end at naming though, everything from species, planet, timeline should be considered and researched as best they can. If you need any help with that then Wookieepedia can be a great source for that, along with any books or comics you might find that help. 4. Background This is where things start getting interesting. Ok, so you've worked out what they look like, where they're from & who they are, the only question that begs for an answer is what made them this way. After all everyone has a past that somehow effects how they function today. For example and I hate to sound explicit here but you might have a female character that despises men due to abuse that she's suffered by a man in her past which in turn made her particularly messed up and aggressive. On the other end of the spectrum you might have a character that was born into a wealthy family and led a priviledged life but chooses against that way of life and decides to become an outlaw or rogue if you will. In a nutshell the background of your character forms who that person is and thats when you'll find your character really starts to take shape. The more you seep into their past the more you'll find fresh ideas just pop into your mind. 5. Don't Over-Do It Again this another pitfall I see people making time and time again. As you've already mentioned making a character all too powerful is guaranteed to end in failure. I've seen some people leave backstories that suggest they have entire fleets at their disposal which at the end of the day is gonna feel silly when you get in-game and realise you're nothing more than a low level 'grunt' running around completing missions for far more powerful NPC's. The best way around this is to keep things simple. Instead of concentraing on things like "He killed 200,0000 Jedi on Tython single handedly!" think in a bit more realistic fashion. The way I do this is to add simple things like what bothers my characters everyday life or what makes him happy. Sometimes its the smaller things that matter the most and they can certainly make your character feel more 'alive' . I'll add more to this when I have time but in thye meantime I'd also suggest creating your own character sheet on the TOR RP wiki. If you need any help I don't mind setting up a template for you. Hope some of thats helped anyway. _________________

My! that was a bit of a guide their Chief! But yeah, Sure's nailed it. There is lots to think about but you'll find it has an odd way of slotting into place as you go. You might for example, decide your character was born on Balmorra. So you look up the planet on SWTOR, then Wookipedia and bits of the info jumps out at you, something you really like and BAM! an idea starts forming.
Don't be afraid to have it imperfect either - many of us have edited or even re-written wikis as different things have come to light; and that usually ends up making the character more well-rounded anyway!
As for me, I don't use any such externsive system - I create all my characters by having a nice cup 'o tea then reading the tea-leaves afterward and consulting a local psychic. After that I cross-reference it with Deep Thought from Hitch-hickers guide to the Galaxy and get the perfect character basis. Once that's done I go out and get properly rat-arsed and return home fully blottoed, then sit down at the laptop and write up the character.
Voila! done!
(actually that does kinda sound like many of my character synopsis :S) |

| @SS, seting up the template would be great, I never wrote in any wiki... @LW I am planing to keep the birthplace unknown, so when the game starts some of u can tell me he heard some gossip witch could mean that I am from Balmorra (in ur case). Does that sound good? wtf, I could bet I wrote these things! xD anyway here: -Gender: Male -Age 24 or 26 -Race Human -Name: I have no clue! I am open 4 suggestions. - Chaotic Neutral-evil -Personalty: Heling the poor who can't help themselvs, kills to arogant authoritys if the bother him to much, Credits above ALL! Is a bit paranoid (sees plots even if they dont exist),. -IMMUNE to torture and force mind trick, after all, he was me merryed once. ( lol just kidding on this one) - he's family was poor, so he spent lots of time pocketpicking, picking apartmant locks, stealing. and had no problems with it, beside that mostly the stuff was not worth to much to do: Come up with a past, I am open 4 suggestions (as allways) |

| Right first things first we need a name before I make a template or anything. If you want you can use this great little Star Wars name generator that Lunarwolf found. I prefer to make them from scratch but a name generator is perfectly fine. Also try and pick/create a name that you think would really fit your characters appearance, personality etc. I see that you'd made a great start already though mate, this bit in particular I thought was really cool: | RedPhoenix wrote: | Is a bit paranoid (sees plots even if they dont exist) |
Little things like that are great things that you can really work on to bring your character to life. _________________ |

| I want to add in that: Don't be afraid to make major changes later along the line. Skursir must be MkIII now. He started off as a bad-@$$ rogue Republic Soldier, changed to a loyal and tough-as-nails Republic commando that works for EPOCH secretly and the form you see him now is someone who has completely thrown away life in the Republic in favour in going back to his Bounty Hunting roots. (Hope this gives some inspiration!)
And I want to elaborate on the "Don't over do it" point. In his history, Skursir has only killed 1 or 2 Sith or Jedi before the game starts. This is to represent that force users are indeed extremely tough and that killing one is indeed a great feat. _________________ |

| Heya BP ^^ You probably noticed a post veeeerrry similar to this one over at Viking's "Introduce Yourself" thread, but I thought it best if I repeat it incase you don't see it! I just wanted to draw your attention to This Announcement Thread incase you think it's taking us a long time to get back to you about your application; we won't be processing yours or Viking's (or anyone elses) until the new year - I didn't want you to think we'd forgotten you! As for your character? I'm more than willing to lend a hand once xmas is over |
